Horse Racing: Progressive Ballydoyle star to shine in The Derby

RACING expert Graeme Johnston (@GraemeJ_83) returns to share his best bets from Saturday's showpiece race at Epsom, The Derby.

Saturday 4:30 | The Derby | Epsom | ITV

The Derby is here and a field of 13 runners line-up for their dates with destiny. It may be the sports blue-ribbon occasion but this year's renewal is severely lacking in proven Group 1 ability. However, what it lacks in proven class it makes up for with two seriously progressive horses who could potentially be too good, and the race revolves around one of them.

Sir Dragonet (3/1 Unibet) has only seen the course twice and the chances are few outside of Ballydoyle knew who he was over the winter. He was slow to come to hand, so slow in fact he wasn't entered for the Derby and had to be supplemented on Monday.

Even so, he is rapidly making up for lost time and with two impressive wins is now the apparent stable number one for the big day. Sir Dragonet has stamina in abundance and despite yet to race on anything other than soft ground, I suspect he will cope just fine here, even if rain would be appreciated.

Sir Dragonet does have a slightly high knee action but the ground should be fine and I suspect he will win this on his way to becoming a very special colt.

Best Bets

The Derby – Sir Dragonet (3/1 Unibet)

I grew up watching Hearts games with my dad and playing football at every opportunity so betting on it was the logical next step! Football coupons became a Saturday ritual and it introduced me into the world of horse racing. I started watching it on a regular basis, and after Galileo's Derby win in 2001 I was hooked. I follow both flat and national hunt racing attending the northern meetings when possible.
