Corners Tips | Chesterfield v Sheffield Utd | 16th April 2016

RUSS BUTTERWORTH (@CornerKickTips) returns to share his favourites corners bet of the weekend with League One Saturday’s destination.

Chesterfield v Sheffield United | Saturday 13.00

A 2-1 win over Barnsley at the weekend pushed Chesterfield nine points clear of the relegation zone and with five games to play, the Spireites are all but safe after a disappointing season following their play-off semi-final defeat last May.

Paul Cook left, Dean Saunders got hired and fired before Danny Wilson was appointed on Christmas Eve. Just two wins in his first six saw Chesterfield remain in real trouble – a point above the drop zone.

But in the subsequent 11 games the Spireites have lost just twice with one loss in five at home – three of these games featured over 10 corners.

Now, about the two matches that went under – prior to the 17 corners in their game with Port Vale last time out, they shared nine corners in a ‘dare not lose’ 0-0 draw with fellow relegation candidates Fleetwood who averaged 10 corners-per-game in their previous eight away. While not ideal, you’d expect these games to be tighter than usual.

Previous to that, Chesterfield suffered a 4-1 loss to Walsall in a encounter that saw more goals than corners – the two teams managed just four between them – shocking stuff.

However, it was the third time in nine matches that Walsall had restricted their hosts to a solitary corner and looking at the four away games, the Saddlers have played since, they’ve averaged 5.50 corners-per-game from just 3.50 shots-on-target – it’s surprising that the eight attempts on-target they managed that day only resulted in three corners.

When you also consider the last Chesterfield had fewer than five corners in a home game was 59 games ago (Boxing Day 2012), I’m happy to file that one under ‘one of those games’. In the longer term, the Spireites have managed more than 10 corners in 10 of their last 16 as hosts.

Sheffield United find themselves in a comparable position, albeit at the other end of the table.

Despite an encouraging performance (and 12 team corners) in the 0-0 home draw with Gillingham last Saturday, the Blades are nine points off the play-offs and you would think nothing less than 15 points (and a huge slice of good fortune) would be required to see them extend their season.

However, despite another disappointing campaign, a change of formation to 3-5-2 in late February has been a bit of a catalyst. The players enjoy it, the fans like it and it has seen United win four of their six subsequent Bramall Lane outings as they look to end the season on a high.

While the Blades have been unable to replicate this form away from home, taking just one point from a possible 12, the attacking intent the fans are demanding is certainly evident as they’ve racked up an impressive total of 34 corners – three times hitting more than nine corners.

Over United’s last 16 road trips, they have seen Over 10 Corners bank on 12 occasions.

I’m expecting goals and plenty of corners when the two teams go toe-to-toe on Saturday as both teams have a real go at this one in front of a sell-out crowd.

The Over 11 Corners option is priced up at 21/20 but with five of Chesterfield’s last 16 homes finishing on exactly 11 corners, I’m happy to take the 20/21 on offer for Over 11 Asian Total Corners (bet365) which will see our stake returned should that happen again.
