GAVIN Horsfall (@GHorsfall) is back with his ever-popular Notebook to pick out a couple of fancy anytime goalscorer prices from the Football League.

Notts County v Mansfield | Friday 19.45

An unfortunate opening day of the season last week for the Anytime Notebook; we got the wrong Ruben Reid support acts for Plymouth as both Graham Carey and Greg Wylde scored ahead of Jake Jervis, Lawson D’Ath was a non-runner and we’ll scrap Mark Duffy from the stable, the less said about that the better.

Early days in League Two but pre-season doubts about how Notts County might fare could be allayed pretty sharpish as Ricardo Moniz’s side open up with two wins. There was plenty to like about the opening day win at Stevenage – players looking comfortable in the quoted 4-1-4-1 (which played more like a 4-3-3) with Liam Noble pulling the strings in midfield and Jon Stead leading the line.

Kyle De Silva (11/2 Stan James) started wide on the left but his average position was more central and got ahead of Stead on plenty of occasions. Just a handful of first team appearances for the former Crystal Palace youth player, he has the potential to cause Mansfield all sorts of problems on Friday night.

Plymouth v Portsmouth | Saturday 15.00

Portsmouth are another side to open up with two wins as they head to Plymouth in what should be an entertaining game with two attack-minded sides.

One of the things you get with this Portsmouth side is excellent delivery from set-pieces and despite the attacking nature of both sides, I’m going to put up Pompey centre-back Christian Burgess (18/1 Bet365) who was the target for almost all of Kyle Bennett’s corners in the 3-0 home win against Dagenham.

Burgess, signed from Peterborough in the summer, was on the score sheet four times last year.

Crawley v AFC Wimbledon | Saturday 15.00

The life of a goalscorer punter is eternally frustrating; a scroll through the scores and scorers on a Saturday afternoon always brings up a name YOU KNOW you should have backed. Last week’s culprit was Gwion Edwards (7/2 Bet365) at Crawley who you may remember made the Notebook a couple of times last season.

Edwards’ performances for Crawley earned him a call up to the Wales senior squad before a hernia operation at Christmas saw him play the remainder of the season with an injury, failing to recapture the form that saw him score five in 11 from October to December.

Operating mainly on the left last week, he got up ably to support Lee Barnard in the 1-1 draw at Oxford and opened his account in League Two with a header after a nicely timed run into the area.

Best Bets

Notts County v Mansfield – Kyle De Silva to score at anytime (11/2 Stan James)

Plymouth v Portsmouth – Christian Burgess to score at antytime (18/1 Bet365)

Crawley v AFC Wimbledon – Gwion Edwards to score at anyime (7/2 Bet365)
