You have to fear for the Black Cats here. Sunderland’s only hope is that Spurs suffer a hangover from their Wembley Champions League struggle against Monaco on Wednesday night.
Prior to that defeat, Tottenham went to the Britannia last Sunday and rattled four past Stoke. Spurs also won there 4-0 in April, a result that showed their very real threat to winning the Premier League title.
The only other team to have won by a four goal margin at the Britannia since Stoke returned to the top-flight in 2008 is Chelsea in 2013/14. To me this is a good indication of what Spurs are capable of in the Premier League at the minute.
Sunderland have suffered plenty of heavy defeats on their travels over the last few seasons. Their last four finishes read 17th-16th-14th-17th since 2012/13 and during that time they’ve conceded a total of 134 goals in their 76 Premier League away games; 1.76 goals per-game.
Last season was worse than ever with 42 goals conceded on the road; 2.2 goals per-game. Four goals were leaked at White Hart Lane in January, two the previous year and five in 2014.
Interestingly, Christian Eriksen scored in every one of those fixtures. Harry Kane still looks a bit off colour which is understandable after his ridiculously long playing year and Vincent Janssen looks a little bit rubbish if I’m honest.
That makes Eriksen my pick of the scorers and the price for him to bag a goal is not too shabby, 21/10 with PaddyPower.
There’s a good chance that Sunderland find the back of the net with Jermain Defoe back to haunt his old club but Tottenham have a complete hold over Sunderland in this fixture winning 12 of their last 14 home ties against the North East club.
1/3 on the home win is something I’d get hounded for tipping, and rightly so. However, I do like the 39/29 from Marathon about Spurs scoring three or more.
Sunderland conceded three or more in seven of their 19 away Premier League games last season, all of them to clubs in the top 11.
