Saturday’s Bet Of The Day: Pressure’s on for Pompey

JACK Wright's (@JackWright_BSB) brilliant Bet of the Day continues on Saturday as we head to League One…

Wimbledon vs Portsmouth | Saturday 1st May 2021, 15:00

Let’s get back to our tried and trusted process of finding a game involving two teams fighting to achieve their goals at either end of the table.

AFC Wimbledon aren't quite safe just yet, although they will be if results from elsewhere go their way, but keeping it within their own hands, one point from their two remaining fixtures will guarantee they'll be playing League One football next season.

Opponents Portsmouth don’t quite have that luxury, although they at least currently have possession of the final play-off place and they know maximum points from their final two games would force Charlton to win their remaining three in order to snatch one of the League One golden tickets away.

All of which means we should have a full-blooded encounter on our hands here at Plough Lane.

Pompey top the league for away games in which they have picked up 20+ booking points with 17 of their 22 league road trips having seen them cross that line (77%) – a snapshot of their five most recent sees them follow that trend.

Infact if we look back to when Danny Cowley took over from Kenny Jacket, he has now had seven away games in charge and his team have crossed 20+ booking points in each of them, including two straight red cards.

It’s interesting to note that the Dons have drawn 20+ booking points from each of their last five opponents at home, also suffering two straight red cards in those games.

The man in the middle is a good one for our bet with Charles Breakspear issuing more League One cautions than any other official, flashing his yellow card on 56 occasions from his 14 appointments as well as a red four times – a tasty average of 47.14 booking points per game.

Finally, the Surrey born official has taken charge of two Portsmouth games this term, the first being on the opening day of the season where he showed seven yellows plus a 94th minute red and more recently at Plymouth where as well as awarding a penalty he issued five cautions – in both games the men from Fratton Park crossed 20+ booking points.

With William Hill quoting 3/5 I was happy to see Sky Bet’s offer of 5/6 and so 20+ Portsmouth booking points is my confident selection to get May off to a winning Bet

Having had a passion for football for as long as I can remember – I’m talking Shoot League Ladders here – one of my first “bets” is still my biggest win. After begging my mum to let me fill in her pools coupon so I could show off my knowledge, eight draws later and a cheque for £11,500 was soon in the post. As a Norwich fan it’s important to have a good grasp of what’s going on in the lower leagues and I also like exploring those less popular leagues to have a delve into any stats-based markets that are available. Right now, I’m particularly enjoying player bets. Outside of sport, I love eating and drinking - maybe a little too much - as well as listening to a varied spectrum of music, both from the comfort of my own home and at festivals.
