WEEK 4 of the new NFL season concludes in the early hours of Tuesday with Tom Selwyn (@Tom_Selwyn) casting his expert eye over the best bets from Detroit’s trip to Seattle.

Detroit Lions @ Seattle Seahawks | Tuesday 01.30 | Sky Sports 2

Seattle got their season back on track with a shutout win over Chicago last week, while Detroit continued their poor start by losing at home to Denver.

The Seahawks are the heavy favourites here, but given that Seattle generally start slowly I can’t back the -9.5 line with confidence. Instead, I’ll be using their slow starts for my bet and backing the Seahawks -3 in the second-half against the Lions.

It was something I remembered about the Seahawks from last year and I figure it to be to down to their style of play – wear the opposition down using a bruising running game with RB Marshawn Lynch.

The stats certainly back up this view that they start games slowly; last season, at home, they averaged 10.8 points in the first first-half and 14.8 in the second period. This season so far (with only one home game to look at) they’ve averaged six points in the first-half and 20 points in the second.

Detroit’s poor form this season should also help us in this one; in their two away games this year they have averaged 15.5 points in the first-half and only 6.5 points in the second. Neither of the teams they’ve played (San Diego & Minnesota) rival the Seahawks in terms of defence either.

I know we’re only working with a very small sample size in both cases and I doubt it will be quite a big a gap as 13.5 points, but the way Seattle play makes me believe this is a great bet.
