Horse Racing – Future staying star can shine in Derby Trial

RACING expert Graeme Johnston (@GraemeJ_83) picks out his best bet from Saturday's action.

1:55 Lingfield | Oaks Trial | ITV4

The Lingfield Oaks trial can throw up clues for Epsom and I think this is a very interesting renewal. At least six of these look very unexposed and full of potential and there is one I have my eye on, who I think looks like a filly with a huge future.

Lady Of Shalott (10/1 Bet365) won her sole start as a juvenile at Yarmouth in really good style and is a filly I'm very excited about. This daughter of Camelot is well bred and looks sure to relish the extra distance she will encounter.

What is noticeable is Jamie Spencer has come to Lingfield for her ride before dashing over to Ascot for his later mounts. Given he was on board her for her debut, it's a great sign he's showing this commitment and I feel she is overpriced in what does look a good race.

2:30 Lingfield | Derby Trial | ITV4

The Lingfield Derby trial follows the Oaks version and, in my opinion, though this is still a decent race it looks a lot less competitive. My eyes are drawn to one runner and I think he could have a big future.

Corelli (7/2 William Hill) is well bred (related to Lucarno) and he looks to have inherited plenty of stamina. He's won twice, in a maiden and a conditions race and takes a step up in class and distance here but it's one I expect him to take in his stride.

He looks a big galloping sort and I am sure Frankie Dettori will look to make plenty of use of him here. He will look to set the pace or at least track it and I think he will use come and get me tactics quite far out.

He may not have the pace for the Derby but he will be hard to beat here and could have a huge future as a stayer.

3:10 Haydock | Swinton Hurdle | ITV4

The Swinton Hurdle is a great early summer feature and this looks a strong renewal. The presence of John Constable means there are plenty running off feather weights and I'm backing one who is in receipt of a lot of weight.

Capitaine (9/1 Paddy Power) was a very good novice hurdler two years ago but he's never reached the level that I expected him to. When he went chasing, it looked like he was set for a high level once more, but his career over fences was put on hold after a crashing fall in a Grade 1 at Kempton.

He's a strong traveller and tends to pull hard, which means he doesn't see out his races and hasn't fulfilled his potential yet.

In a big field handicap there will be plenty of pace on, with horses for him to get cover in behind, and I've backed him on the basis he has the potential to be better than these when he learns to settle. And if Saturday is that day, he's well overpriced.

Best Bets

1:55 Lingfield – Lady Of Shalott (10/1 each-way Bet365)

2:30 Lingfield – Corelli to win (7/2 William Hill)

3:10 Haydock – Capitaine (9/1 each-way Paddy Power)

I grew up watching Hearts games with my dad and playing football at every opportunity so betting on it was the logical next step! Football coupons became a Saturday ritual and it introduced me into the world of horse racing. I started watching it on a regular basis, and after Galileo's Derby win in 2001 I was hooked. I follow both flat and national hunt racing attending the northern meetings when possible.
