The rumour mill had suggested Kit Symons wasn’t far off losing his job as Fulham manager last week but the Cottagers showed their teeth on Saturday in a 0-0 draw at promotion favourites Middlesbrough.
I’ve put the boot into Kit on many occasions since his appointment at Craven Cottage and I stand by the criticisms. For me, he just doesn’t convince but the dogged nature of Fulham’s display last weekend showed the players are still willing to work for their under-fire boss.
With Uwe Rosler predictably seeing the axe at Leeds this week, plenty will be sucked into backing the Londoners on Wednesday night. Rosler delivered nutty Whites owner Massimo Cellino with country music when the Italian demanded “heavy rock football” but I’m not sure replacement Steve Evans will offer those services either.
Still, I don’t think Leeds are in quite as bad a position as Cellino and many pundits believe. Performances have been reasonable on the whole and their W9-D7-L12 record on the road since the start of last season suggests they’re wise enough to get results on their travels.
Fulham have W11-D5-L9 in Championship action at the Cottage under Symons’ watch, collecting 1.52 points-per-game. It’s a decent effort but for a side with promotion ambitions, it’s not good enough and certainly puts me off a punt on the capital club.
Instead, these two teams feature heavily in the goals-based trends in their respective home/away fixtures. Fulham have seen Over 2.5 Goals in 18/25 (72%) of those aforementioned Symons matches on home soil with 14/25 (56%) also bagging in the Both Teams To Score market.
Leeds have seen 15/28 (54%) of their road trips feature three goals or more and a chunky 18/28 (64%) prove profitable for BTTS backers. Evans isn’t a naturally cautious manager and I’d expect him to encourage the Whites to release the shackles and so we may be treated to another high-scoring encounter.
If we combine the two major goals markets together, Bet365 are offering 5/4 on Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams To Score and that looks more than fair considering it’s already won in 5/10 (50%) of their respective home/away fixtures this term.
Wolves v Brentford | Wednesday 19.45
Wolves’ four-game unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end on Sunday as pre-season Championship favourites Derby produced their best performance of the season to run out comfortable winners.
Kenny Jackett will be looking for a response from his side on Wednesday and with a W15-D8-L5 record at Molineux since promotion, the Black Country boys look a decent option around even-money. However, I’d be happier taking a goals approach again.
Wolves have delivered for Over 2.5 Goals hunters in 10 of their past 14 fixtures on home soil and in 16/28 (57%) since the start of last season. The hosts have scored at least twice in 15/28 (54%) at Molineux and also been involved in 14/28 (50%) winning Both Teams To Score bets.
Visitors Brentford are the only Championship side yet to keep a clean sheet this season but the Bees did grab their first win of the campaign under Lee Carsley at the weekend. The Londoners have seen three or more goals in 10/20 (50%) away matches as well as 15/28 (54%) since they joined Wolves in the second tier.
The BTTS selection has won on 16/28 (57%) road trips for Brentford with the Bees boasting just five clean sheets across that sample. I’d be happy backing goals again this midweek and Bet365 are offering 11/10 on the same Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams To Score bet, which I like.
