YET another winner for Gavin Horsfall’s (@GHorsfall) ever-popular Notebook on Boxing Day. Can he continue his hot streak on Bank Holiday Monday?
Burton v Swindon | Monday 15.00
A 9/4 winner but a frustrating Boxing Day nevertheless; opportunities to back the right players at the right prices are few and far between so postponed fixtures when you’re already involved at a decent prices can test your patience.
Such was the case with Callum Butcher (8/1 Paddy Power) for Burton at Bradford on Saturday who now goes off a touch shorter but is still a backable proposition.
Butcher took up an advanced midfield spot in the last couple of games for Nigel Clough’s new look Burton, scored two in the 3-3 draw with Doncaster last week and can take advantage against a Swindon side who’ll be without Raphael Branco following his red card in the 3-1 loss to Gillingham.
Mansfield v York | Monday 15.00
A first win in eight for Jackie McNamara at York doesn’t signal a turning point for the Minstermen but they certainly head into Monday’s game at Mansfield pleased at stopping the rot.
In Bradley Fewster (4/1 Paddy Power) they look to have busy, tenacious talent who can cause Mansfield’s solid backline some problems. Nineteen-year-old Fewster is on-loan from Middlesbrough and has looks a handful out wide and playing just off front man Vadaine Oliver.
Cambridge v Barnet | Monday 15.00
I make it two or more goals scored by Cambridge in seven of the games since Shaun Derry took charge.
Midfielder Luke Berry (7/2 Paddy Power) has been one of those to benefit from Derry’s wise words with the 23-year-old given licence to get forward and has rewarded his manager with four in his last seven.
Barnet visit The Abbey on Monday in good form but need to translate to performances on the road where they’ve lost eight of 11.
Portsmouth v Luton | Monday 15.00
Finally, keep an eye on team news at Fratton Park ahead of Luton’s trip to Portsmouth this Monday. Pompey’s central defensive selection issues worsened with the sending off of Adam Webster in their 3-2 defeat to Leyton Orient.
Adam Barton came in to plug the gap but Ollie Palmer had all the space in the world to score from two headers for Orient to bring about a first loss in nine for Paul Cook’s men.
Luke Wilkinson (14/1) has missed the last couple of games with a hamstring injury but may return to contention for Luton.
Wilkinson was highlighted in the recent Notebook Extra as a centre-back to keep onside – three goals in 20 appearances this season for the 25-year-old, who started his professional career at Portsmouth.
Best Bets
Burton v Swindon – Callum Butcher to score at anytime (8/1 Paddy Power)
Cambridge v Barnet – Luke Berry to score at anytime (7/2 Paddy Power)
Mansfield v York – Bradley Fewster to score at anytime (4/1 Paddy Power)
Portsmouth v Luton – Luke Wilkinson to score at anytime (14/1 Bet365)
