Manchester United secured a place in the Champions League knockout stages with a win against Villareal midweek. It was a much more defensive and pragmatic performance and a rare clean sheet for the Red Devils but the improved organisation will have been a relief to fans. Their task doesn’t get any easier though as they head to an in-form Chelsea side who are showing consistent defensive resolve matched with an attacking threat.
Thomas Tuchel has all but cemented his place as one of the elite coaches of the continent with the balance, quality and winning mentality his sides have. The back 3 is protected superbly by Jorginho and N’Golo Kante and that base allows their wing-backs to bomb on and find themselves routinely in the box. It’s Reece James who has been getting all the headlines of late and rightly so, he’s making a serious case to Gareth Southgate to be the number one right back for England.
James is chalked up at hefty 8/1 to score anytime and that’s just too big to ignore given his current record. He’s still being chalked up as a wing-back but the positions he’s taking up more resembles that of a winger or wide forward, he loves getting in at that back post. He’s bagged 4 in his last 5 in all competitions and had 4 shots against Newcastle lately and 5 against Juventus. Given he’s half the price in most other places it looks worthy of a small wager.
The main play here though is the go-to when Chelsea are involved and that’s to back them to win a relatively low scoring game, We can get 6/4 on the Blues to win and under 3.5 goals and given how often their wins also accommodate fewer than 4 goals it looks a decent boost from the best price 8/13 on the straight up win. United may try replicate a similar gameplan to last week but Chelsea know how to edge these games out and have a great chance of winning if they can keep the goals out the other end.
