CARDIFF host Liverpool on Super Sunday. Gaurav Chaddah (@Gchaddahjourno) shares his betting thoughts.
Cardiff v Liverpool | Sunday 21st April 2019, 16:00 | Sky Sports
Liverpool’s 4-1 success in Portugal on Wednesday night ensured yet another European semi-final for Jurgen Klopp’s men but I’ve no doubt attention will be fully focused back on the Premier League as they go in search of a historic first Premier League title.
The Reds have four games remaining, starting with Cardiff, before hosting Huddersfield and Wolves, either side of a trip to Newcastle. Destiny is however no longer in their hands and the Merseysiders will be relying on arch rivals Manchester United to take points off Manchester City next midweek.
In the Premier League, Liverpool have only have lost one game and it’s difficult to see Cardiff making that two. A potential stumbling block against Chelsea last weekend was met with no danger, as Klopp’s boys registered their fifth successive league success and moved two points clear of Manchester City.
It’s Liverpool’s away form which has been a contributing factor to the reason they have surrendered what was at one point a seven-point lead at the top of the table. Recent wins against Fulham and Southampton both came with scares and prior to that, the Reds drew three successive trips at West Ham, Manchester United and Everton.
The blip however does seem a long time ago and the Reds are on course for 97 points, which amazingly may not be enough to secure title honours.
Bluebirds still fighting
Neil Warnock’s men gained a vital three points in the battle for safety as they beat Brighton 2-0 in the week, but the Welsh outfit still have it all to do if they are to retain their Premier League status.
Tuesday’s victory means they are now only two points off Brighton but the Seagulls have a game in-hand, meaning like their opponents Liverpool, destiny is not in their own hands.
Cardiff were thumped 4-1 at Anfield earlier on in the season and their record against the Big Six is worrying, having lost all 10, with Liverpool and United still to play.
City’s general home form is a worry too. Prior to the New Year, Cardiff put together four wins from five matches and were starting to look like a tough side to play in the Welsh capital. However, since mid-December, their home form reads as W2-D1-L5 which simply isn’t good enough if they are to survive.
The Betting Angle
The visitors are as short as 11/50 with Unibet for a sixth successive win and I can’t see past them here. Away from home, Liverpool have tended to concede goals of late, with Fulham and Southampton finding the net recently, and before that West Ham too.
Despite Cardiff not gaining a single point from the Big Six, they’ve managed to find the net against Chelsea, Arsenal and United and I think they can do so again here. So I’m happy to take the 11/5 from 888 on Liverpool to win and Both Teams To Score.
