National League Tips | 4th-5th March 2016

NON-LEAGUE nut Callum Jones (@Goaldust) has two bets worthy of our interest this weekend from the National League coupon.

Torquay v Kidderminster | Saturday 15:00

Another Saturday, another massive six-pointer.

It’s 22nd v 24th, and two sides who are experiencing some of their worst times in recent history.

Torquay United looked absolutely dead and buried at the turn of the year but they’ve turning things around. They actually sit sixth in the current form table, picking up only a point fewer than both Cheltenham and Tranmere in that spell.

The Gulls four wins in the last six is more than they accrued in the 26 games that proceeded it and it appears they’ve truly turned a corner. They’ve won their last three, including a hugely impressive away triumph at Macclesfield on Tuesday night and the bridge to safety sits at only five points now – and the Gulls have a game in hand on the two sides above them.

By contrast, Kidderminster’s bright spell seems to have been extinguished. After winning three games on the bounce, they’ve lost four of the last five, netting just once, and their only point in that period came at home to Chester – only after letting a two-goal lead slip in the second half.

Kiddy’s hopes of staying up seem to be all but over now, as they sit 10 points from safety, having played more games than anyone down in the division’s depths.

Home boss Kevin Nicholson is keeping his feet on the ground, stating: “At this stage of the season it’s about keeping the lads physically and mentally fresh; we have to be professional and take things one game at a time.”

I’m sure his side won’t be getting carried away with recent form and with the distraction (welcome, or not) of the FA Trophy now out of the way, I believe Torquay have a real chance of completing the ‘great escape’.

Saturday’s clash is crucial, but on recent form, I’m absolutely stunned you can have a home win at odds-against.

There may only be five points between these two but the gulf in quality and confidence must be vast at present, so I’ll happily take the 21/20 (Coral) that’s widely available.

Forest Green v Grimsby Town | Friday 19:45 | BT Sport 2

Maybe I’m missing something here, but I’ve got absolutely no idea why Grimsby are favourites on Friday evening.

Granted, they are a major player in this division, and they’ve won nine of the last 14, and are the best of the rest behind the top-two at present. But having FGR as underdogs at home is almost scandalous.

Rovers have closed the gap on leaders Cheltenham to just one point, and they are unbeaten in 11 games in the National League. They’ve scored in each of their last 18 league fixtures, and have bagged six clean sheets in the last 11.

Their home form is just awesome. Ady Pennock’s side have won their last nine on their own patch, scoring two or more in seven of those games.

The home side are the best side in the division on current form, whereas Grimsby sit ninth in that table, notching only 10 points in their last six.

The Mariners have lost three of their last six on the road, including a 4-2 drubbing at struggling Halifax last time out, so their favouritism here does not appear warranted.

I do think it’ll be a close affair but it’s crazy to me that Forest Green are 9/5 to win this one. They’re grinding out valuable wins week after week, and I really fancy them to overhaul Cheltenham at the top by the end of the season.

You can get evens (Skybet) in the Draw No Bet market, which is a nice play considering it should be tight and with that in mind, I like FGR to win by one at 10/3 (Bet365) too.
