TOP GOALSCORER genius Gavin Horsfall (@GHorsfall) shares his favourite Top Goalscorer fancies ahead of the 2017/18 League One season.
WLB Season Preview 2017/18 | League One: Top Goalscorer
At short prices it all looks a bit mundane in League One.
Danny Graham (12/1 Bet365), Brett Pitman (14/1 BetVictor) and Omar Bogle (14/1 Ladbrokes) all take a step down in class although Bogle's 19 goals at Grimsby last year perhaps the more relevant form line for the 25 year-old.
Ricky Miller (14/1 Bet365) at Peterborough takes the step up after scoring 40 goals for Dover last year; not quite sure how any potential goes untapped by the scouting network in this country but fair play to the lad who rocks up in League One at 28 years-old.
But first there’s a six-game ban for Miller following a biting incident at Dover last season – he sounds a character.
Will Grigg (14/1 Bet365) is hardly ever on actual fire but when he is it's usually in League One. Just the one goal after September last year for the Northern Irishman but it's 40 in his last two visits to the division with Wigan and MK Dons, so he has to be respected.
Conor McAleny (25/1 Ladbrokes)
It was a one-sided renewal last year. Sheffield Utd were the best team by a distance and Billy Sharp got on the end of most of their moves – 30 goals in 46 appearances for the 31 year-old at an average of 0.66 goals-per-90 minutes, a figure only matched by James Vaughan at Bury and Conor McAleny at Oxford.
Former Everton loanee McAleney (25/1 Ladbrokes) joined Michael Appleton's U's just as the transfer window was slamming shut in January but helped himself to 10 goals in 14 starts as Oxford threatened the play-off picture.
It was Uwe Rosler who nipped in to give McAleney a permanent home this Summer and he looks an able replacement for the departing David Ball at Fleetwood.
A huge 4.4 shots at goal averaged over the second half of the season, 40% of those making the keeper work, puts him in the picture if he maintains his form across a season and Fleetwood go close, 25/1 looks just about right.
Alex Jones (33/1 Ladbrokes)
Further down that list is Alex Jones at Bradford who warrants a mention.
Fourteen goals for both Port Vale and Bradford last term at an average of 0.5 goals-per-90, he starts his first full season for Stuart McCall's side and should be all the better for it.
Definitely a touch of class for me and I'm a big fan of those loaness who find a permanent home, a settled pre-season and can attack the start of a season in good form.
Jones ticks the box for all three and looks a runner at the prices.
Ian Henderson (66/1 SkyBet)
In an open contest, one final dart for me at Ian Henderson at Rochdale who probably won't take up many pre-season preview column inches but has reached double figures in each of the last four seasons.
He’s miles too big at 66/1 (SkyBet).
Best Bets
League One – Conor McAleney to be Top Goalscorer (25/1 each-way Ladbrokes)
League One – Alex Jones to be Top Goalscorer (33/1 each-way Ladbrokes)
League One – Ian Henderson to be Top Goalscorer (66/1 each-way SkyBet)
