A big part of the WLB team. Willie Duncan (@Willie_Duncan) returns with his best bet in Scotland this week.
Inverness Caledonian Thistle v Dundee United | Saturday 15:00
Inverness Caledonian Thistle know all about Billy McKay. The 27-year-old Northern Ireland striker enjoyed a very happy spell in the Highlands and scored an impressive 54 goals in 121 appearances for the Caley Jags before making a move to Wigan Athletic.
Unfortunately for McKay, the move down south failed to work out and the striker will be back at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium on Saturday afternoon on his latest mission – a, seemingly, one-man crusade to prevent Dundee United from slipping into the second tier of Scottish football at the end of the season.
McKay has found the net seven times since signing on at Tannadice and – somewhat depressingly for United fans – his are the only league goals that the club has managed to score since the striker made his Dundee United debut.
Dumping manager Jackie McNamara as manager doesn’t seem to have made much difference either, for United have picked up just four points since Mixu Paatelainen took over – a 1-0 win against Ross County at Tannadice by virtue of McKay’s late penalty and a 1-1 draw at Rugby Park against a Kilmarnock side that were reduced to 10 men after 24 minutes…oh, and McKay scored a penalty in that match too.
I watched Hearts win 1-0 at Tannadice at the start of Mixu Paatelainen’s reign and it was abundantly clear then that United’s confidence was in ribbons – what has happened since then certainly won’t have helped and, given that they’ve only scored two away goals in their last six matches (both Billy McKay penalties!), it’s easy enough to back against the Terrors this weekend.
It’s true that Inverness have not been themselves on home soil so far this season, having won just three of their nine matches at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, but I reckon that I’d be hard pushed to find a Premiership team that I wouldn’t want to back at odds-against on home turf against Dundee United at present.
For that reason, I’m happy to put up Inverness Caledonian Thistle at 11/10 as my best bet from Scotland this weekend.
