NFL nut Kyle Robins (@AhhYeahKyleYeah) runs the rule over the MVP market ahead of the 2018/19 season.
NFL 2018/19 Preview: Regular Season MVP
People like myself spend hours evaluating this market, working out who’ll lift the award come February, only for them to blow out their shoulder in week one. One thing we can all agree on however, is that quarterbacks drive this market and I think it will be Aaron Rodgers‘ year again.
Ironically, this time last year Rodgers was my pick, only to go on an miss 11 weeks of the season with a fractured collarbone. With a full off-season under his belt, a new offensive co-coordinator and the addition of Jimmy Graham, now might be the time Rodgers claims his third MVP award.
Green Bay's defence has held Rodgers back over the years but it could be different this time around. Rodgers can flourish and lead the Packers back to the Superbowl.
He once threw a stunning six touchdown passes in half back in 2014 and although he's lost teammate Jordy Nelson, Rodgers can benefit from the addition of Jimmy Graham. He's a nightmare for defenders and alongside Davante Adams and Rnadall Coboo, Rodgers has a trio who can help him throw plenty of touchdowns this year.
There's some 7/1 available with Sky Bet, and that's where I'll be hedging my money.
Alternative options
At longer odds, Drew Brees (14/1 Coral) and Phillip Rivers (47/1 Marathon) can be considered as long odds outsiders.
Both have an abundance of talent on offence to complement their throwing ability and should have no problem putting plenty of points on the board. Matt Ryan won the award back in 2016 on the back of similar.
There's hype around Rivers and his Chargers every year, but this time around he has a talented group of receivers to go with running back Melvin Gordon. There's a lot to like about this team.
It's all about consistency for Rivers. He could throw seven TD's one week and follow it with five picks the next. If can get the balance right, he could have a great year.
On the other hand, Brees and the Saints are one of the league's most consistent offences.
I personally think they would have gone on to win the Superbowl had it not been for the Minneapolis miracle in the last divisional round.
I love the Saints (18/1 Bet365) for the Superbowl this year and I think Brees has all the surrounding pieces to be a huge contender for the MVP award, especially if the Saints can pick up where they left off.
