LOUIS Ross (@LouisRoss67) dips into the European Tour this week with a look at the best bets for the Scottish Open.
Scottish Open | 9th-12th July 2015 | Sky Sports
The traditional warm up to The Open Championship, this week's Scottish Open has attracted a stellar field and I'm hoping we get some huge pointers for the big one next week.
I personally don't write about the European Tour because I don't know courses or players well enough. Well this week, the course at Gullane (actually 16 holes of one track and two of another) is new to everyone. The biggest event this place has hosted is some Open qualifying. A traditional Links course, Par 70 of 7133 yards. Big wide fairways and penal rough.
This really is the perfect place to tune up for St Andrews (still can't understand Jordan Spieth's absence) but it's also somewhere a good portion of the field will be using as a practice round. Recent winners like Justin Rose and Phil Mickleson show the cream usually rises to the top. That's the case here again in my eyes and there are a couple of men that really stand out.
My first pick, because I want these odds out there, is John Senden. I'm not saying this is my best chance of winning but I really LOVE this price. Senden 5th in the World Matchplay, 8th in The Players and 14th in the US Open. 100/1. Yup 100/1. 14th at Chambers Bay? Wow that's a great price.
Branden Grace. I was on him EW at the U.S. Open at 100/1 as was most of the golf betting world. The best backed outsider in years. He shared the lead until the 70th hole. It was a great performance and just backed up a couple of years of really impressive form. He will be there come Sunday. 25/1
Shane Lowry and Marc Warren make up my team this week. Warren has the ability to be a Top 50 player. He's a performer in Links Golf and will love conditions here. Shane Lowry is becoming a top player himself. Rapidly. I thought he was wonderful at Chambers Bay and the way he kept going on Sunday was eye catching. This is his kind of golf and unlike a big number of the field, he's here solely to win.
