A fantastic run of form coupled with a slight wobble from their North London rivals has put Tottenham firmly in the driving seat to secure a top four finish in the EPL and with it a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Spurs are currently looking in great shape, winning their last four games scoring 14 goals & conceding just two – a run coincidentally that started at the Amex with a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are looking back to their telepathic best, last term the dynamic duo broke the record for most goal combinations in a season, eclipsing the previous best of 13 set by Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton way back in 1994/95 and in February the pair surpassed Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard’s all-time Premier League record of 36.
However, there has always been room for a third member with players like Lucas Moura and Gareth Bale having their moments over the last couple of years but never showing enough consistency to nail down that spot on the right side – until now with the signing of Dejan Kulusevski proving to be a masterstroke, finally looking to have solved that particular conundrum.
The 21-year-old Swede looks like he has been at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for years, already contributing three goals and six assists in his first 11 appearances – impressing me with his decision making as to when to shoot or slip in one of his team mates.
Antonio Conte’s formation has also benefitted Matt Doherty who has been outstanding in recent performances registering two goals and three assists in the six games prior to the trip to Aston Villa where he was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Matty Cash which left the Ireland international with a season ending knee injury.
Although a blow to both Spurs and the player, as admitted by the fiery Italian manager, Conte does have the choice of either Sergio Reguilon or Ryan Sessegnon as a replacement so shouldn’t be too impacted in that respect.
The Seagulls did Spurs a favour by beating Arsenal last weekend but had collected just ONE point in the SEVEN games before that which has seen Graham Potter’s men fall away from challenging for the European qualification places and in to mid table – leaving them, aptly given their nickname, on the beach.
Form, momentum and the hunger for points sees the home side plenty short enough at a best priced 8/15 but there seems a clear route to get them onside with the addition of them to score a second half goal.
Of those aforementioned 14 goals in the current win streak nine have come in the second half with at least one strike in all four, & the eye test backs that up in telling me their performances after the interval have been considerably better than the opening 45 minutes.
