JACK Wright's (@JackWright_BSB) brilliant Bet of the Day continues on Saturday as we head to the final day of the regular Championship season.
Derby vs Sheffield Wednesday | Saturday 8th May 2021, 12:30 | Sky Sports
It’s the final game week of the regular season in the Championship with all games kicking off at 12:30 on Saturday lunchtime.
As we know the top end of the division has been settled for some time with Norwich up as champions for the second time in three seasons, another of last season’s relegated trio Watford back up automatically at the first time of asking and Brentford third, with Bournemouth, Swansea and Barnsley assured of a play-off spot but just with some jostling for final positions to be done.
At the other end of the table, it is FAR from over though with Wycombe down barring a mathematical miracle we have three clubs fighting for the one remaining survival spot, going in to the final weekend with Sheffield Wednesday on 40 points (-21 goal difference), Rotherham 41 points (-16 GD) and Derby 43 points (-22 GD).
Rotherham travel to Cardiff but the Rams and the Owls clash in a truly colossal last game of the season!
A win for the Millers would see them survive IF Derby and Sheffield Wednesday end in stalemate or the Owls win – so only the Rams have their fate in their own hands as a win for Wayne Rooney’s men would see the bottom three as it is now all drop down to League One.
The nerve-jangling clash at Pride Park promises to be extraordinarily tense with so much riding on the game, in a fixture between two of the lowest scorers in the division, in fact the home side rank bottom for goals scored with just 33 goals from their 45 games failing to score in 12 of 22 at home, Wednesday have only managed four more goals in total than their hosts, drawing a blank 11 times on the road.
This clash is guaranteed to be high in tension with not only the result of this game impacting the players emotions but also any news filtering in from Wales too.
We should expect a full-blooded encounter which could to and fro given the situation of the game being played and also the live league table – there will be desperation, joy, ecstasy, pain and despair in equal measure and what is certain is at least one of these famous clubs will be banished to the third tier of English football come 2:30pm.
Who better, then, to have in charge of such a white-hot occasion than the one and only Mike Dean – the chosen one by the EFL picking arguably the biggest game of the season to give him his first appointment outside of the top flight this term.
The Wirral whistler is probably the best-known official in the English game and ranks second in the EPL for yellow cards issued with 79 yellows and a league high eight reds, twice as high as any of his colleagues – clocking up and average of 42.27 booking points per game.
We know Mr Dean loves the big stage and a final day of the season, relegation decider, live on the TV certainly fits the bill and so my Bet of the Day is quite simple and that is through Bet365’s Bet Builder for Derby AND Sheffield Wednesday both to receive over one card – so that’s two yellows or more for each club – with surprisingly good odds of 7/4 – it’s much shorter elsewhere.
