This race was turned into a procession last season when On the Fringe won by 17 lengths and he's back again to defend his crown. That was on soft ground so can he defend his title?
Not only did On The Fringe win this race, he also followed up at Aintree and Punchestown to complete a remarkable Foxhunters treble. His return this season was a low key effort at Leopardstown but I expect a much better effort here. He may well win this, but I'm taking him on with an each way bet.
Last year I tipped up and backed Paint the Clouds in this race and unfortunately the rain came and effectively ruined his chances. He still came third after travelling well through out and I expect him to go close today, but he's not my selection.
I can't preview this race without mentioning the beautiful Victoria Pendleton. Whatever your thoughts on this ‘experiment' it's brought a lot of exposure to our sport and I wish her will here.
She won her first race on Pacha Du Polder and he is a talented horse. I genuinely hope she gets round safely and I would love her to go close, but I don't expect her to get the fairytale victory unfortunately.
My selection is the ex-Willie Mullins trained Marito. A high class chaser in his prime he has taken well to life as a hunter chaser and comes here with a huge chance.
He turned a Down Royal hunters chase into a procession and though he was beaten last time out that was just a prep race and I expect him to go close. There are question marks about his stamina, but he has the class to go close and I'm backing him each way here.
