The Tour Championship | Thursday – Sunday
So, the last golf piece of 2015. We've had five winners on the PGA Tour this year, so hopefully we can go out with number six.
The PGA season reaches its climax with the final event in the FedEx Cup series, The Tour Championship. These finals which started with the Top 125 players in the FedEx rankings are ended by this event where the Top 30 players in the standings will fight for the $10m winners cheque.
The East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia plays host. A Par 70 of some 7300 yards, this is quite a challenge for the Tour pros. Featuring four of the toughest Par 3s on tour, narrow fairways and reasonably penal rough, the real challenge here are the green complexes. Most slope viciously from back to front and playing around 12 on the Stimpmetre means only Augusta is a tougher place to putt.
After weeks of extremely low scoring, mostly courtesy of Jason Day, I would expect a winning number here of between -8 and -12 at best. 15-20km per hour winds are forecast mixed in with a good chance of rain.
Long accurate hitters will give themselves the best chance as (thankfully), we should not be seeing wedges into the green on every other hole. It's one of those classic second shot courses. 15 feet below the hole and there is a great birdie chance. However, 15 feet above the hole and you could be in big trouble so par is a really good score from there.
After eulogising about Jordan Spieth earlier this year, I have to say that I've never seen a player hit the ball as sweetly and with such consistency as Jason Day in the last few weeks. He really should have been a pick last week as everything was in his favour but I will be honest with you, the only reason for not selecting him was purely ”he just cant keep this going”.
Not a very good reason I will admit, hours of research and you don't pick a guy because he's been winning too often. Madness, but I bet we've all done that. Golfers are just not that consistent.
You have to say, everything, and I mean everything points to the Aussie again. I'm going to regret this, but I just cant believe he can do it again.
Henrik Stenson was my NAP last week. You can't ever be disappointed with a 10th place in any tournament, but I really thought the big Swede was set last week. Well, I am going with him again.
The winner here in 2013 with a score of -13, I am going to repeat what I said before the BMW. Stenson comes alive at this time of year. He has been in very decent form and from what little Sky showed of him, it was obvious he is still striking it really well. 10/1 in a field of 30 is enough for me to invest.
Patrick Reed. In world sport, possibly only Cristiano Ronaldo and Niklas Bendtner think higher of themselves than Mr Reed. A hard guy to like for sure, but he is a very very good golfer.
After his showing at last years Ryder Cup, I am more than a little surprised that Reed has not won at least once this year. However, he is coming back into form with a 4th in the Deutsche Bank and 28th at Conway Farms. Looking to add to his four Tour wins (all in the last two years), I quite fancy taking him on at 40/1 with Skybet paying five places.
The ‘honour' of being the last selection of 2015 goes to Bill Haas. The winner here in 2011, Haas is a serial contender in these kind of events. His win four years ago with a score of -9 does prove he has the ability to close a tournament. A couple of Top 10s in August and 19th last week fuel my urge to back him.
Ranked 28th in the World Golf Rankings, Haas is normally thereabouts and should give a really good run for your money at 66/1 again (60/1 if you fancy 5 places with Sky).
Until The Masters ……………………………
