Crawley Town v Sheffield United | Saturday 15.00
Crawley are rightly getting a few column inches this week as Dean Saunders looks for a third win on the bounce when Sheffield Utd visit.
The Blades’ unbeaten run extended to five as they saw off Rochdale in midweek but it’s a run that has included a fair few lethargic halves of football and it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see Crawley’s attacking threat pose problems here.
There’s plenty of pace for Saunders to call upon if he wants to play on the counter; Mathias Pogba, Gwion Edwards and Gavin Tomlin all offer something as well as Izale Mcleod up top.
That pace out wide though is tailor-made for late arriving midfielders in the box so Anthony Wordsworth (13/2 BetVictor) gets the nod.
Chesterfield v Fleetwood Town | Saturday 15.00
Four losses on the bounce for Paul Cook as his Chesterfield side’s playoff push begins to falter while Fleetwood could be well in the mix themselves if they return from The Proact with three points on Saturday.
It’s been a couple of weeks since we noted Nick Haughton as a player to watch; the 20-year old has been getting more game time and Graham Alexander has found space for both him and Antoni Sarcevic in the same side with the latter shifted out to the right to leave Haughton more central for last weekend’s win against Notts County.
Honestly, when all the lower league judges are hailing Haughton as the next Nick Powell remember who put him up at 19/2 (BetVictor) to score against Chesterfield in February 2015.
Morecambe v Cambridge United | Saturday 15.00
Morecambe face a pivotal week if they are to realise any aspirations of mounting a playoff charge as the season approaches its end. Away visits to Luton and Oxford follow Saturday’s home game against Cambridge, by which time Jim Bentley should have a clearer idea of the ambitions his side may have.
Cambridge recovered well from the six they conceded against Portsmouth to hold Wimbledon to a goalless draw last week but their vulnerability on the road should continue to worry Richard Money as United peer over their shoulder at improving teams beneath them in the League Two table.
A shout from nowhere this one but Shrimps defensive midfielder Alan Goodall (14/1 Bet365) keeps springing up in my match notes. The former Fleetwood man hasn’t scored in two years but doesn’t sound far away from connecting with a Morecambe set-piece in the near future.
