Pakistan v England | ODI Series | 11th-20th November 2015 | Sky Sports 2

ODI cricket returns on Wednesday as England begin their four-match tussle with Pakistan. I will look into the series itself elsewhere, but for now I want to share an enticing top series bowler bet.

After an excellent showing against New Zealand, accompanied with consistent performances in domestic cricket, David Willey was inexplicably dropped for the Australia series. What on earth were Bayliss, Farbrace et al thinking?! Certainly a strange one, but I expect they now realise this man deserves a lengthy run in the side.

Before we consider Willey’s brief career to date, it’s worthwhile looking back on the history of top bowlers in the UAE. Dating back to 2006, 12 ODI series have been contested here. For the touring side, a seamer has topped the wicket charts in 9/12. Steven Finn did so for England back in 2012.

Historically in the UAE, spin has less of an impact in ODI series than in Test series, and of course the Pakistani batsmen have no problems playing the turning ball as it is. As a result I cannot see Adil Rashid or Moeen Ali notching a shedload; their ODI averages read 41.72 and 38.40 respectively. What Rashid lacks in consistency, Moeen lacks in wicket-taking threat.

In the pace department – Steven Finn, Mark Wood and Ben Stokes are all absent. Without this trio of quicks in the mix, it becomes a no brainer. David Willey has to be backed to claim top series bowler at 4/1 with bet365.

It’s almost certain he would’ve claimed top bowler in both the New Zealand and Australia series this summer had he played every game. In those series, the all-rounder notched 11 wickets across five innings at an average of 24.73. All the more impressive when you include the scalps of Steve Smith and Kane Williamson, two of the best players in the world.

Willey’s uncanny knack of taking wickets at key moments, most notably early on, is something every side craves. He also provides a handy option at the death.

I know I said this back in September, but I expect him to prove his worth in this series and ultimately lock down a place in the side. Let’s hope he bags a hatful.
