India v South Africa | T20 Series | 2nd-8th October 2015 | Top South African Batsman

With South Africa’s top six back to full strength, the top series batsman market looks wide open. Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers are the two stand-outs, both fairly priced at 11/4, whilst JP Duminy and David Miller look decent value at 7/1 and 8/1 respectively.

If I was to plump for a big price I’d go with Duminy, who has an impressive T20I average of 35.75 from 56 innings. But it’s South Africa’s T20I captain who I’m siding with. Faf du Plessis can be backed at an appealing 22/5 with 10Bet to top the run charts this series.

In 24 T20I innings, Faf has notched six fifties and a century on the way to achieving an excellent average of 42.36. Without the captaincy he averaged 32 from 7 innings; with it he averages 47.15 from 17. Small sample sizes of course, but du Plessis relishes this format, particularly when handed leadership responsibilities.

The 31-year-old missed New Zealand’s tour with a knee injury but before that top scored in the last two T20I series. Overall he has top scored in 3/11, but bear in mind two of those in which he didn’t top score were World T20s where he featured in just 2/5 and 3/5 games respectively.

Returning from injury with ample time should mean du Plessis is fit and fresh with a clear mindset. Lack of game time could work against him but he will be well-practiced and has enough quality to hit the ground running.

The captain fittingly acts as the glue of the South African middle-order and as a result possesses the most important role this series. He will be tasked with accumulating runs off the spin-filled middle overs, setting the platform for the explosive hitters to cut loose at the end. The burden of captaincy can continue to work in his favour here.
