National League: Too goal-shy games from Saturday’s card

NON-LEAGUE expert Paul Maddison (@LouthBigDog) shares his favourite fancies from Saturday afternoon's National League coupon.

Leyton Orient v Wrexham | Saturday 9th March 2019, 12:35 | BT Sport

This is a massive game at the top of the table as the league leaders Wrexham head to second-placed Leyton Orient to battle it out in front of the BT Sport cameras. The Dragons are two points in front of their hosts here, but they have played a game more.

Since taking over the hot-seat at the Welsh club, Bryan Hughes has seen his men win four and draw once in his opening five games. The fixture list has been fairly kind to him though, with four of those encounters coming against teams in the bottom half of the league.

Wrexham's main problem has been constant for the past couple of seasons, and that is scoring goals. They have found the back of the net just 45 times in 36 matches this season and their leading scorer is on just four.

The O's haven't looked very convincing in recent weeks and I can see this being a tight and nervy game. Neither team would probably be too upset with a draw here.

At home, Justin Edinburgh's men have netted just five times in their last five matches and start striker Macauley Bonne has registered six blanks in his last seven matches.

I'm expecting this too be a close game without many goals, so I'm more than happy to take the 37/40 with BetVictor on Both Teams to Score ‘No'. This bet would have landed in 14/19 home games this season for Orient and 14/20 away games for Wrexham.

Halifax v Ebbsfleet | Saturday 9th March 2019, 15:00

It's fair to say I'm not expecting a classic here either as Ebbsfleet make the long trip north to Yorkshire to take on Halifax.

The Shaymen have found a bit of form in recent weeks, winning three of their last four; the foundations of this good form has been built on their solid defence. Jamie Fullarton's side have conceded just twice in their last nine in all competitions, the problem is they have only scored five in the same period, three coming in their last outing.

Ebbsfleet games have also been lacking goals in recent weeks, their last seven matches have seen just eight goals – four for them and four against. Garry Hill's men have failed to score in five of their last six, so it could be a long afternoon for their strikers as they take on a team that has conceded just nine times in 18 home games in the league.

With goals not looking likely, I'm again heading to the Both Teams to Score ‘No' market. You can get 20/23 with BetVictor and that looks a decent price. The bet would have landed in 11 of Halifax's last 16 at home and in an incredible 16 of the last 20 Ebbsfleet games in all competitions.

I'm also going to have a couple of quid on the No Goalscorer double in these two matches, you can get 67/1 with Bet365 on that.

About Author

I first got the taste for betting when I was quite young, every year I would pick a horse for the Grand National and my Dad would go to the bookies and put my £1 each way bet on. As soon as I could get away with it I was in the bookies every Saturday afternoon searching the football coupons and putting on stupidly big accas. Now enjoy betting mainly singles or small multiples, usually sticking to the English leagues. I don't favour any particular market, but rarely watch a game without having small first scorer bet for a bit of fun. I've got 3 boys which take up most of my time, but luckily they enjoy going to watch football and days at the races. I'm a life long Grimsby Town fan, one of a few that has seen some ups as well as all the downs.
