Horse Racing: Dual course winner hard to oppose in Day 1 showcase

RACING expert Graeme Johnston (@GraemeJ_83) picks out his best bet from the key race in the opening day of the Newmarket July Festival.

15:35 Newmarket | Princess Of Wales Stakes | ITV4

The Princess of Wales Stakes is a Group 2 over a mile and a half and looks a fascinating race. Some top class form is on offer and you could make a case for a few, but I'm going for one who is on the up and looks sure to win races at the top level.

Wings of Desire is a horse I like and I backed him at Royal Ascot in the Hardwicke Stakes where he ran alright finishing 5th when meeting trouble. Though he met trouble he didn't look like winning and he's becoming disappointing. He should be better for his reappearance however I'm abandoning my faith in him.

Poets World interests me. He is a typical Stoute project and I have no doubt he is up to this level. Last time he was second to Deauville which reads well in this race but he still has to improve to win this. The stable is going better now than it has all season and I think he'll be tough to beat under Ryan Moore, bit there is one here who may be beyond him this afternoon.

Frontiersman is bred immaculately and this half brother to Derby winner Australia is slowly becoming a top class performer. Second in the Coronation Cup behind the high class Highland Reel he is worthy of his position as favourite for this. I still feel he had something to prove but this dual course winner is hard to oppose in this company and I've backed him here.

Best Bets

15:35 Newmarket – Frontiersman to win (7/4 Sportingbet)

I grew up watching Hearts games with my dad and playing football at every opportunity so betting on it was the logical next step! Football coupons became a Saturday ritual and it introduced me into the world of horse racing. I started watching it on a regular basis, and after Galileo's Derby win in 2001 I was hooked. I follow both flat and national hunt racing attending the northern meetings when possible.
