Scottish Football: Sinking Sons must be opposed, says Willie Duncan

SCOTTISH football bible Willie Duncan (@Willie_Duncan) shares his favourite fancy from north of the border this weekend.

Dumbarton v Falkirk | Saturday 15:00

With Hibernian and Dundee United going head-to-head for the Championship, Falkirk have fallen off the pace in the race for automatic promotion in recent weeks.

Peter Houston's men have been held in three of their last five fixtures and, as such, the Bairns find themselves eight points adrift of the two teams at the top of the table.

Falkirk's hopes of a title triumph might be fading fast, but a play-off place – a top four finish – is certainly attainable and Houston's men can take another step towards achieving that objective when they travel to Dumbarton on Saturday afternoon.

Sinking Sons

Dumbarton are in the doldrums; the Sons have won just two of their last 17 matches in all competitions and they've failed to find the net in five of their last six fixtures.

What's worse is that Stephen Aitken's side suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in their history earlier this month when junior side Bonnyrigg Rose won 1-0 – away from home – against Dumbarton in a Scottish Cup replay following a dismal goalless draw between the teams in Bonnyrigg.

The Sons went to Easter Road last weekend looking for a positive result to pick them up, but Hibs barely broke sweat as they cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win and I'm backing the Bairns to heap yet more misery upon Aitken's team this weekend.

Bairns are… better

Falkirk have won just one of their last five fixtures on the road, but there is a very simple reason for siding with Houston's charges in Saturday's match – the Bairns are better – much better – than the Sons and they can make their superiority count in this one.

The 10/11 quote from bet365 for an away win, therefore, looks like an early Christmas present for punters and following Falkirk could well reap rewards this weekend.

Houston's men can get back to winning ways against dreadful Dumbarton and, at a shade under even money, the Bairns are superb value ahead of this Championship clash.

Falkirk to beat Dumbarton is my best bet from the Scottish football card this weekend.
