Horse Racing – Inconsistent sprinter can show class at Newbury

RACING expert Graeme Johnston (@GraemeJ_83) has been in the money recently and has taken a look at the best plays for Saturday's action from Newbury.

2:20 Newbury | Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup Stakes | ITV4

The Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup Stakes is a decent race and has attracted some nice types, but my eye is drawn to a three-year-old colt who still could be a Group 1 horse in the future.

Young Rascal (10/3 BetBright) was my derby selection in June and he ran below my expectations there. He didn't seem to handle the course that day and this is likely to be much more to his liking.

He won the Chester Vase earlier in the season, where he beat some high-class colts and on that form, he's possibly a cut above these. I feel this is a very realistic level for him to make his return, and with the stable in good form, there are a lot of positives here.

If he is fully fit, I expect him to win here before going on to bigger and better things.

3:30 Newbury | Dubai International Airport World Trophy Stakes | ITV4

The Dubai International Airport World Trophy Stakes is a Group 2 over six furlongs and has attracted some of the countries top sprinters.

There’s plenty of Group 1 form on offer but there is one who's stable has had a quiet season that could still reach the heights he promised earlier in his career.

Equilateral (4/1 Ladbrokes) was first seen this season when hacking up in a Doncaster novice stakes, where he announced himself almost out of nowhere to near the top of the three-year-old sprint ranks.

He bombed out in the Commonwealth Cup before again running poorly in a Group 3, but his stable was under a cloud and I haven't lost faith in him yet. He is a very good horse and after his confidence-boosting win last time out, he is well worth his place back in this grade.

This is where we find out if he is a potential Group winner, and I feel he is, and can reward backers.

Best Bets

2:20 Newbury – Young Rascal to win (10/3 BetBright)

3:30 Newbury – Equilateral to win (4/1 Ladbrokes)

I grew up watching Hearts games with my dad and playing football at every opportunity so betting on it was the logical next step! Football coupons became a Saturday ritual and it introduced me into the world of horse racing. I started watching it on a regular basis, and after Galileo's Derby win in 2001 I was hooked. I follow both flat and national hunt racing attending the northern meetings when possible.
