Wimbledon: Buoyant Muller is worth chancing at big odds on Wednesday

WIMBLEDON reaches the Men's Quarter-Final stage on Wednesday. Here tennis analyst Gavin Mair (@gavinnightmair) shares his favourite fancies from SW19.

Wimbledon Day 9 | Wednesday 13:00 | BBC

Tuesday was the most disappointing day of the tennis season so far. We had chances to score two high priced quarter winner bets, but Simona Halep and Coco Vandeweghe were unable to do the business.

In the case of Halep, she was only a couple of points away from victory and in the article yesterday I suggested backing Johanna Konta to cover the outright stake, so at least we have something to show for the match – if not what we hoped for.

I warned yesterday that Magdalena Rybarikova could be a nightmare match up for Coco Vandeweghe, but had assumed that Rybarikova’s nervous head would show and that Vandeweghe would capitalise. Unfortunately, Vandeweghe never turned up and she was soundly beaten by the in form Slovakian.

Today is men’s quarter final day, and my focus of attention is on a match where our remaining outright bet remains.

Marin Cilic v Gilles Muller | Wednesday 13:00 | BBC

This is a battle between two players that are at their best on the grass. Cilic has come through his draw effortlessly, and starts as a heavy favourite to win this encounter.

This gives us a position of power heading into this match as we backed Cilic at 4/1 a couple of weeks ago to reach the semi-finals.

However, Muller is on a great run of form winning a title in Hertogenbosch and of course beating Rafa Nadal two days ago.

If you look at the players that Cilic has lost to on grass this season they both match the profile of Muller.

Cilic lost to Feliciano Lopez in the Queens Club final, and to Karlovic in s’Hertogenbosch. The main attribute that both possess is their big and reliable serve, and Muller brings that to the table.

A further reason to oppose Cilic is that he is a player that is fully capable of complacency. It would be no surprise to see him fail take advantage of Nadal’s exit.

The lesson we learned yesterday was to side with caution on the outrights. We did that by backing Konta to overcome Halep, and our pockets will definitely be fuller should we back Muller today – who starts the match at a meaty price.

We have Cilic at 4/1 to win the quarter. Let’s take Muller to win this match, which is certainly possible, at nice odds of 4/1 with Marathon.
