Bookings Tips | Sporting Lisbon v Benfica | 5th March 2016

CARD king Gavin Murphy (@GamePlanGavin) can’t resist a punt on a Portuguese game on Saturday night.

Sporting Lisbon v Benfica | Saturday 20:45 | BT Sport 2

I married into a Portuguese family so believe me I understand the passion the locals have for football especially in the capital city. Indeed on my honeymoon (a cruise around the Med) I insisted on a day trip to Benfica’s Estadio Do Luz stadium. I joked with the tour guide about Sporting Lisbon and he looked at me like I’d killed someone!

Anyway enough reminiscing. This weekend the two Lisbon giants clash in what should be an epic encounter. Sporting lead the league by just one point from Benfica.

You may not know but current Sporting boss, Jorge Jesus, was the Benfica coach last season. He is a Marmite character who will stir the emotions come kick off. He irritated Tim Sherwood hugely when Benfica knocked Spurs out of the Europa League two seasons ago.

The past five meetings between these two teams in terms of cards read as 10-9-9-6-6. Artur Dias is the man in charge of this tussle. He is a middle of the road referee but in his last game in charge of these two in 2012 he lost control when dishing out 13 cards. This week’s line is 6.5 cards and that looks well worth attacking.

As we saw with the Istanbul derby on Monday these games can be frustrating when officials show leniency. There were six cards that day between Fenerbahce and Besiktas. It didn’t win but couldn’t have been any closer! I don’t see that happening again here and I’ve steamed into Bet365‘s over 6.5 cards at 1.90 on the Asian line.

I first got interested in gambling through my cousin. He's a professional gambler and got me hooked as a teenager when you had to pay the 9% tax. Who remembers that?! These days I prefer to specialise on one market rather than spread myself too thinly. Hence my love of cards! Hopefully I can make others a few bob in the process of sharing my bets on WeLoveBetting. On a personal note I love most sports especially cricket, rugby and NFL. I support Tottenham and all things Welsh and outside of sport I enjoy reading autobiographies particularly with a glass of good wine!
