South Africa v New Zealand | 19th-26th August 2015 | Sky Sports 2
From a viewer’s perspective it’s a shame this series won’t involve stars such as Brendon McCullum, Trent Boult and JP Duminy, but from a betting perspective it’s a blessing. With several key players sitting out, the ones that remain can become more prominent, and it’s the New Zealand top series batsman market where this can be capitalised upon.
Kane Williamson, captain of the tour, can be backed at 5/2 with bet365 to top the run charts for his side this series. On the surface that seems a tad short, but assess his recent form and you will see it’s a fair price.
Williamson has played in eight ODI series since 2014, top scoring in five, including all of the last four. That is a mightily impressive feat which highlights how he has fought back strongly after an indifferent World Cup campaign. This is no freak run either; the stand-in skipper possesses an outstanding ODI average of 48.8 from 82 games and is quickly becoming their most consistent performer with the bat.
The absence of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor enhances the chance of this bet landing, with Williamson’s main threat coming from powerful opener Martin Guptill, who is priced at 13/5. Guptill is in impressive form, but he does not offer the extra value required to put our faith in him.
Young opener Tom Latham and experienced campaigner Grant Elliott could both go well, but other than that there appears to be little competition. Against a quality Proteas bowling unit on their home patch, our best option is to side with New Zealand’s most technically gifted and consistent player.
